Tapestries that show both Painting & Sewing Techniques

Class focus is on creating a tapestry using painting on both white and ready made fabrics. Depth and interesting effects are achieved by using a variety of fabrics from velvets to sheers and incorporating free motion embroidery, painting and printing.

"Peering into the Kirtland Warbler's Nest"

The background fabric is a creamy white on white fabric, and I frayed the edges in both directions. The black design is free motion embroidery, outlining the leaf pattern.

The oval section was painted and leaf printed, then machine embroidered. Layers of fabric are attached using blind-hem stitches. Gold silk was used for the cording, along with green yarn.

"Nestled In"

After I assembled the pieces, I painted the branches and leaves, over all layers. The inside borders are ink-jet printed, painted, and dyed.
