War Ripples

War Ripples
62" x 55" L

While teaching in Japan, I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (commonly called the Atomic Bomb Dome or A-Bomb Dome). The destruction of WWII overwhelmed me.
Amazingly, the Japanese have rebuilt the city with an emphasis on peace. In our country, during WWII, Japanese people were placed in internment camps, mostly in California.
This quilt was made to honor the Japanese families, for their losses and difficulties as a result of WWII.

"War Ripples" won Best of Show at the Focus on Fiber 2011, at Betz Gallery. It was juried into the Japan Quilt Grand Prix, a Tokyo Quilt Show. The show will be up Friday, January 20 Friday - Saturday, January 28, 2012

Gated Community VIII

Gated Community VIII
40" x 40" L

Inspired by an ornate gate surrounding a church in the heart of downtown Houston. Though the gates were locked, a huge flock of black birds enjoyed taking over the church yard. While delicate songbirds are becoming endangered, common city birds have increased by 25%.

Dyed, painted, silkscreened & embroidered on silks stitched with free-motion embroidery.

City Birds II
38" x 39.5" L

Influenced by birds at dusk in Houston, at
Highway 59 & Westpark. Every phone line was filled with birds, with hi-rises behind them.

Painted on silk & stitched with free-motion embroidery.

City Birds VI
35" x 32" L

Downtown Houston is a mix of old and new buildings. The birds seem to prefer the older buildings. Like ciity workers, they flock together. They roost on corners of buildings, in signs, on streetlights and wires. Many of the building owners have attempted to put spikes or netting up to deter them, but thus far they have outsmarted all attempts to keep them out.

Painted on silk & machine embroidered.

Hospital Rising
41" x 41"

As I travel throughout the world, I am amazed at the number of cranes I see, always reaching higher. This is at Memorial Hospital in Houston.
As I drove by, hundreds of birds flew in front of me. There were acres of trees there. Now the birds roost on wies and buildings.

Painted on silk & machine embroidered.
