These songbirds nest only in central Texas mixed Ashe-juniper and oak woodlands, in ravines and canyons. They use long strips of cedar bark and spider webs to build their nests. In March they fly to Texas to nest and raise their young, and leave in July to spend the winter in Mexico and Central America.Urban expansion and the clearing of land threaten its habitat.

Nests of this songbird are found in jack pine barrens located in northern Michigan. Historically, stands of young jack pine trees were created by natural wildfires that swept through northern Michigan. Modern fire suppression programs altered this natural process, reducing Kirtland's warbler habitat. Kirtland's warblers migrate from Michigan to the southeastern coast of the United States on their way to wintering grounds in the Bahamas.

| The Bachman's warbler breeds in the Southeastern United States and winters in western Cuba and the Isle of Pines. Meager records indicate the birds migrated southward in late summer and returned in early spring, with one group apparently moving generally along the East Coast, and another skirting the Gulf Coast and continuing up the Mississippi Valley. Exact population numbers are unavailable; but, the population is known to be extremely low. It is shown here in the Huisache tree. |
Amazingly serendipitous, as I was creating the Warbler tapestry, I drove by an area being developed near the Houston Intercontinental Airport. Note the sign stating, " Caution, Migratory Birds Nesting" which stood crooked, hit by construction equipment. A call to the Audubon Society informed me that more than 25 birds migrated through this area, and the Warblers were one of the species adversely effected by the construction. |
